Flexible and hygienic plastic containers instead of wooden boxes for Carl Kühne KG

Carl Kühne has four production locations in Germany and another four elsewhere in Europe. They produce high-quality fresh products like gherkins, red cabbage, vinegar, dressing and mustard.
The ingredients are transported to the production location in Sennfeld and to the production location Straelen, near the Dutch border about 450 km away from Sennfeld. Due to increasing prices for gas and toll and a wider variety of produced goods, the company was looking for a packaging solution, which reduced the costs for transportation and storage. A smart and flexible solution was chosen by Carl Kühne in agreement with Schoeller Arca Systems: 4.000 wooden boxes - which are used for years - will be replaced successively by the plastic foldable large container, Magnum CI 975 S from Schoeller Arca Systems.

a foldable and re-usable packaging system

With this system, the food maker gets a re-usable packaging system, which - compared with the wooden boxes - is much more hygienic and results in big savings.  Eight plastic foldable large containers can be stacked where in earlier days only four wooden boxes – with the same space. Also in the trailer space is absolutely better used: Per trailer 52 filled wooden containers - or Magnum with higher volume capacity –  can be transported. When empty and folded - during the returntrip - the advantage of the Magnum container is shown even better: A 156 empty Magnum containers fit into the trailer. This is three times as much  as before – and with this an important contribution to the savings in transport and environment.

real savings

The Magnum containers are optimal for conveyors and in addition existing automated handling systems.
As the Magnum foldable large container and the existing wooden container have the same footprint it is possible to use both systems during the transition period. The introduction of this modern and flexible packaging system means that Karl Kühne achieves efficient logistics and reduces its costs. The application of the Magnum foldable large container also reduces the costs for transportation. At the production facility the storage space is used in an optimal way.
