A fresh fish returnable container won the German packaging prize 2007 in the category transport packaging. Schoeller Arca Systems GmbH developed the boxes together with the Hamburg Design-Studio feldmann+schultchen for the fish manufacturer „Deutsche See“ in Bremerhaven.
Wavy form
The design helps the functionality of the boxes. The wavy form gives you a visual feeling of freshness of the product. You can associate the cool blue colour di-rectly with the fish swimming in the sea, especially since the container is halfway transparent. The Design is supposed to aid in selling the fresh fish. Furthermore, it brilliantly suits the logo and corporate design of the customer, Deutsche See.
Unbroken cooling chain
Cooling the perishable goods is cleverly solved by using the new box with its in-tegrated form and function. During transportation the fish is covered with ice. If it was were to stay in melted water it would spoil. This is why there are holes on the slightly concaved bottom of the container. The water can flow through onto the rim, stacked underneath it, and disposes itself in cascades. In this way the fresh fish from „Deutsche See“ is shipped in an unbroken cooling chain from the wholesaler to the consumer in the stores.
Simplified handling
Inmould labels were integrated during the injection moulding, in order to be able to trace the containers over the complete duration of the logistics chain. These maintain the temperature and withstand frequent cleaning. In addition, colour coding on the labels simplifies the handling of the stack/nest container.
So far the fresh fish returnable containers are available in the following sizes: 600x400mm and 400x300mm. Next year Schoeller Arca Systems also wants to have the functions and design on the standard size 800x400mm.
