Packaging & Logistics
The food industries form a chain from agriculture to consumers, in which all the elements are interconnected. The efficiency of the distribution chain and the use of plastic containers is therefore a key success factor. Suppliers of packaging and logistics solutions need close links with all those involved in the production chain, in order to provide products that precisely match the requirements of each phase of production and distribution.
From the Fields to the Shopping Trolley
In the packaging and transportation of food products, plastic containers and crates have the advantage of being hygienic, solid and functional. Today, they are commonly used throughout the food production and distribution process. Plastic containers are ideal for use with food as they are safe, hygienic, easy to clean, and can be used in deep freezing and refrigeration. Plastic containers allow good pretension and can be adapted to the different automated handling systems, which is why they have become indispensable in this market.
Why not Wood or Cardboard?
Restrictive sanitary and environmental regulations are gradually closing the market for wooden containers. Unlike plastic containers, wooden packaging products, especially those made from unprocessed raw wood, are a pathway for the introduction and spread of pests. These pests present major risks to forests and woodland, killing or damaging large areas. To remove them, wooden containers must be treated, either with heat, or chemical fumigation.
Cardboard is limited by its poor performance in humid environments as well as its limited re-usability. It is also weak and can easily be damaged or crushed by heavy loads. Cardboard is not stackable, and does not offer secure protection of contents.
By contrast, the inertia of plastic as a raw material is the key factor in its success as a hygienic, re-usable container for food products. Although it can initially be more expensive, plastic proves to be the most economical solution in the longer term, being light, durable, safe and easy to store and re-use. Plastic containers have smooth sides and rounded corners which make them easy to clean. These many benefits mean that the use of plastic containers is becoming increasingly popular within the food processing industry.
